It's just much more thorough and spins up a lot of subagents to basically do a lot more E2E testing. Not necessarily smarter, imo you could get the same result with a lesser model by procedurally prompting, but a lot more compute and orchestration.

i had to specifically tell fable not to use a bunch of subagents in order to preserve my token allowance.

Fable feels like a slightly more advanced 4.5/4.6 (less verbose than 4.7 and 4.8) with more adversial work checking. And a lot more compute to be more thorough from the first prompt. I feel it would be possible to get pretty much the same results with 4.6 with enough back and forth iterations. It kind of makes sense to me that this is the 'magic' behind Mythos and its cyber capabilities too. Just a massive iterative loop and really going into a lot more detail on edge cases.

It feels to me like Fable is just a slightly more advanced Opus 4.8 (or 4.6?) but with this 'adversarial' self-challenging/checking of work and a more compute to really hunt down edge cases or to spin up many sub agents using lesser models. That's what makes it feel like a big jump, but I think the results wouldn't be so different if you manually challenged 4.6 with enough iterations of logs, screenshots, and follow up questions.

Even when every site in the world’s 3rd biggest economy goes down it’s still just a ‘Partial’ service disruption :D

Not every site, just the ones using DNSSEC. Clearly, denic.de was online, for instance.

Sites without DNSSEC have also been affected. If you could reach any .de page, you had the DNS entries cached.

It's a social network that became socially acceptable to browse at work. It has all the negative attributes associated with a social network and none of the upsides (apart from the occasional recruiter message).

> It's a social network that became socially acceptable to browse at work.

YMMV. I’ve heard a few stories where opened LinkedIn at work was treated as a massive red flag: “this person looks elsewhere, they are not committed to the company anymore”.

It depends on your role. People in sales have it open all the time since it's a legitimate research tool for them.

Yep. Sales and biz dev people use LI constantly not necessarily for connecting, but learning about contacts.

If you’re considered valuable at your current company, instead of being a red flag it can help you get a raise or other benefits.

This. I would rather post on any other social media site at work than Linkedin. It's a major signal that the person is looking for work.

I can’t imagine working in a place toxic enough where:

1. That’s the default presumption (rather than someone doing networking for their current role)

2. Where “looking for another job” is a point of contention

Any good senior engineer should be keeping in touch with others in the industry. And good teams are made up of people with good communication skills who want to be there.

Sure but is LinkedIn even a good place for that networking? Email feels way more productive (and personal) for that

Especially the "Let me show you i have a open linkedin tab while screen sharing so you guys know i hate this place" move as if anyone cares.

No more such thing as commit to the company in western world anymore. Companies are definitely not commited to you.

I've not understood why people wanted it to be a social network. That aspect always seemed bizarre to me until it had been true for long enough to stopped being strange. But this doesn't make sense to me either.

I wouldn't load the site at work because I wouldn't want to signal to my employer that I was looking for another job. I very deliberately didn't accept invites from management at my last employer (small company, ~25 people) until I didn't work there anymore. I wouldn't want them to get a notification if I suddenly revised my profile because maybe I'm shopping around for a new job, for example.

Microsoft wanted it to be a social network because they couldn’t buy Facebook. They did buy Yammer though.

A lot of the bad policies were implemented when getting LinkedIn ready for sale to boost the short term gains and maximize the sale price, once sold it was hard to reverse the policies in order to maintain a healthy market long term. They do kinda have a mini-monopoly / cornered market so they were able to milk that for money.

Yammer was probably one of the most bizarre m&a stories ever.

The same reason there’s probably some dude pitching adding AI to notepad. Fad and fashion.

In the last 20 years “peer to peer”, “Uber for X”, “gamification” and now of course “AI” were the must have tech memes. Back in the day O’Reilly had a conference dedicated to the revolution of… XML.

Social was just another one. Now, even the social companies are kinda moving past social. It’s more about hoarding attention. But when Microsoft was shoveling money at Gartner, we had guys coming in dropping books about how the social enterprise would revolutionize business.

eh, that guy who pitched AI for Notepad was a product of M$lop push for AI everywhere. No one seriously though it needed AI, but if they're trolling for AI pitches, of course that's an easy target, it's already text based. GUI stuff is hard, but raw text?

I actually didn’t know that was a thing. I was trying to cook up something quick and absurd. Truth is stranger than fiction!

> I wouldn't want them to get a notification if I suddenly revised my profile because maybe I'm shopping around for a new job, for example.

If I'm not mistaken, LinkedIn has options for all of this. You can edit your profile with or without a notification post. You can select "show open to being hired only to people outside your company".

Not that I have great (or any) love for the platform, but if I understood you right, these things aren't really issues.

Is it terrible if your employer finds that you're looking for another job? If they like you, maybe they'll intervene to make your life better?

If they hate you, they're less likely to go through a termination process including severance.

I used to always worry about them finding out. Now, I'm having trouble not blurting it out from the rooftops.

I work remotely so I had no idea. I'd have thought that unless you're in HR you wouldn't scroll a website whose primary purpose is to look for new jobs.

Much like X, it's what you choose to use it for. Papers are posted, approaches are debated, and loose groups form to align. It's easy to scroll past the pandering, but there is useful stuff in the dross.

But agreed, it is getting harder and harder to dig to the gems.

That is not the primary purpose of LinkedIn though. It is used extensively by a class of people who are generally decision makers and those selling services to them.

True, found this study fascinating, basically coming to the same conclusion: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11846-020-00378-0

Nice one! Wish someone would make a browser based version a la Chronodivide's RA2

Second complete outage on railway in 2 months for us (there was also a total outage on December 16th), and many issues with stuck builds and other minor issues in the months before that.

Looking to move. It's a bit of hassle to setup coolify and Hetzner but I have lost all trust.

Great to hear but it's still the same shape. I really want a 'credit card' shaped version I can slide into my wallet.

I bought a third party one to do just that, and it's worked fine for me: https://chipolo.net/en-us/products/chipolo-card-spot

I think there are other options too

There's a newer version: https://chipolo.net/en-us/products/chipolo-card

Notably they now support both the Apple and Android ecosystems from a single hardware SKU, although only one at a time, and the formerly disposable battery can now be recharged with a standard Qi wireless charger.

I'm interested to hear this. I had very mixed experience a few years ago with the Seinxon finder card; it wasn't reliably in contact to make it beep, even when I was standing right beside it, but worse it would semi-regularly go into anti-stalker mode and start beeping and spamming iPhones around me with scary-looking notices. This second behaviour was obviously a deal-breaker so I discontinued use of them. (Looks like the company still exists but is now selling newer versions of the cards I bought from them)

Having recently switched to Android I was tempted to give Chipolo products a try, but this reddit thread disuaded me, as multiple users there are reporting the exact kinds of issues that I experienced previously: https://www.reddit.com/r/Chipolo/comments/1n4m4j3/chipolo_po...

I have white Android-only Chipolos, and they work reliably.

Do the third party ones have UWB/"Precision Finding"?

Nope, but you can play sound. For my wallet it's enough to know I didn't leave it somewhere, then sound is enough. Sorry should have mentioned it's not a perfect replacement.

Yeah. Although I'm normally pretty good, it's mostly what did I leave my wallet under in my house?

Does it tell a thief a chipolo is following them around like the apple tag?

You can buy a third party wallet card that works with the Find My network just like an AirTag.

I'm always tempted to buy one of these but most of them seem to be one time usage, and don't have a way to recharge. That always seems very wasteful to me.

Any recommendations for a rechargable but thin one, AirTag itself is too thick for regular wallets.

The ugreen one is rechargable - https://www.ugreen.com/en-ca/products/ca-45298

https://www.eufy.com/uk/products/t87b1011?variant=4875830860...

I've been using one of these with Find My for over a year. I've not done anything with the Eufy app, just the Find My app itself. It lacks the precision find, but you can play a sound through the Find My app / get directions / share the item / flag the item as lost / do left behind and it works well.

The other direction is just get a wallet that supports a real airtag. Because my wallet is so important to me, the name brand airtag, with UWB-enhanced findability, is worth swapping out my wallet rather than getting a sub-par credit-card find my compatible device. nb, I came to this conclusion after getting an aftermarket credit card device and found it lacking.

I have almost an identical wallet; I really considered using the card form factor but I would miss the precision find too much.

The Eufy SmartTrack card is great! Mine is non-rechargeable and going on year 3. They have released a rechargeable version called the “E30”.

I have one you can recharge wirelessly. Forget the brand but it’s been working well

I could be wrong but third party tags bet a subset of the tracking capabilities? Ie less accurate/less likely to be found.

I have the ugreen card, and it works fine. https://www.ugreen.com/en-ca/products/ca-45298

Anyone stealing a wallet would immediately look through the contents and discard such card, no?

My need was finding my black wallet in the house when I forget where I put it. My wife has been very happy that she no longer has to field "Hey sweetie, have you seen my wallet?". I walk around asking it to sing to me, and I find it without bother.

As for theft - you might be overthinking it. It's a black piece of plastic that could easily be a door key. Gutter thieves will rifle the wallet and pull out cash, and credit cards, and drop the rest in the trash anyway. Any regular thief knows they don't want to be caught holding someone else's id.

I mean it's there front-and-center and mentioned multiple times in all materials related to airtags. These are not anti-theft, or stalking devices as they alert the thief. They are tracking devices for misplacing items (e.g. a wallet).

I own 8 AirTags, and have them on all my sets of keys and in all my bags. I've managed to avoid loss about 5 times in the 3 years of using them. It also gives me piece of mind when landing on a plane that my luggage is where its meant to be.

If you want to stop your wallet being stolen, I'm afraid your options are very limited.

I like that it's the same shape. My backbag has an AirTag pocket, so I can just swap out a first-gen AirTag for a second-gen if I need to.

I think there are also several third-party wallet trackers that integrate with the Find My network.

I have a wallet with a pocket for an airtag.

i guess the point of having a tag in the shape of a card is to prevent a thief from throwing the obvious airtag away, the card tag may look like an ordinary bank card and kept in the wallet longer

I haven't stress tested it but I have a Spotfinder in my small wallet.

Atuvos one at 1.6mm and UGreen one at 1.7mm are great, though one time battery is annoying. There are some that have wireless charging, though thicker.

SpotMinder is supposedly wireless charging though haven't tried.

Have one in my wallet. Will probably get some more AirTags.

airtag compatible, shows up in Find My: https://nomadgoods.com/products/tracking-card

Do these have the ultra wide band chip? you lose a lot of utility without it.

From the FAQ: Does Tracking Card Air support Precision Finding? You can track your items from anywhere in the world using the Apple Find My app, but sound alerts only work when you’re within about 150 feet. Since Apple doesn’t yet support Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology for third-party trackers, Tracking Card Air doesn’t include Precision Finding at this time.
