The biggest surprise for me was never having to compute the inverse. I never saw such gymnastics to avoid computing things like I saw people avoiding computing the inverse of a matrix (for obvious reasons.) It's really amazing to work in the numerical computing field for a while. You leave it though because you can't stand the code.

But you learn a lot.
